In Honour of the Mystics by Rosanna Ienco

Padre Pio is highly admired and honored in my parents’ hometown and in that whole region of Southern Italy. Padre Pio was an Italian monk who was made into a Saint. He was also known as a mystic and he is regarded as one of the most popular made-to-be Saints in modern
times. The miracle working Padre Pio was also one of the most controversial Saints, as he was said to have suffered the Stigmata for fifty years. Stigmata are feelings of pain or marks on the body, in places relative to the crucifixion wounds of Christ and they appeared on the hands of Padre Pio. The earliest known case of somebody suffering from this affliction was St. Francis of Assisi in 1224. When Padre Pio died, at the age of eighty-one, in San Giovanni Rotondo, the marks had completely vanished—his skin was left without a blemish. To this very day, my mother still has a letter from him. When she was fourteen years old she wrote to him, asking for help in healing her mother (my grandmother) from an illness. She received a written reply from him, in Italian, saying, ‘Pray with an open heart with your intention to the spirit of God, for the health of your mother. I bless you and wish you all the best.’ My mother received great comfort and reassurance when she read these words and within a short while, my grandmother made a full recovery.
